Costa Brava Destination Dialogue

Twenty agents were invited by Selling Short Breaks to the Grange hotel in Tower Hill to learn about the province of Girona and Costa Brava

The Girona region is served by Gerona airport predominantly used by Ryanair. It seems that unfortunately airlift has been further eroded and nearby Barcelona will be the closest airport with direct flight from London although there are still direct flights from Manchester and Birmingham. The top part close to the French border and the Pyrenees are served by Perpignan in France as well

Girona itself makes a fascinating city break, an attractive city close to the beach, four rivers, wonderful restaurants, good accommodation and a Jewish quarter. This is a city break I would never have thought of selling or even doing myself but now that I have seen what it has to offer, I would definitely recommend it as a less expensive alternative to nearby Barcelona

Many of the beach destinations are well known as being cheap and nasty and now out of favour with the British 18-30’s and coachloads of saga louts. These include Lloret de Mar, Blanes and Estartit. The region is trying to change this image with smart new 5 star properties like Peralada and 4 star properties like NH and top conference and meeting facilities

I went to Tossa de Mar a few years ago and was surprised at how pretty it was, a painters and photographers dream with ruins at the top of the hill overlooking the Med. It certainly wasn’t just Brits abroad, karaoke and kiss me quick hats. There is an old town called Vila Vela with narrow cobbled streets and a distinct Catalan flavour

Costa Brava has some of the best diving in Europe, 27 blue flag beaches, 10 golf courses, spa hotels and impressive conference facilities

This region of Spain is not just about beaches. The Pyrenees are only an hour and a half away and there are four main ski resorts and three golf courses. The area is also good for hiking and cycling

This area is also famous for gastronomy, seafood, wines and olive oil

It is advisable to hire a car to take advantage of the medieval villages, small less accessible bays and the five natural parks

It was an interesting evening and I think every one of us were inspired and now have a different opinion and a much more positive perception of the area

We were all rewarded for our interest as they were very generous and offered us all a 4 night fam trip next spring featuring Blanes, Palamos, Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugell, La Garrotxa, Besalu, Figuere and Girona city. They also gave us a lot of useful information to refer to in the meantime
